Mavenir pushes forward with OpenRAN

Mavenir and MTI have announced a commercial portfolio of OpenRAN RRUs with the O-RAN interface. The new portfolio, the companies say, will underpin the ability for service providers to move from walled garden systems based on proprietary interfaces to a wider, multi-supplier ecosystem that enables faster innovation and lower total cost of ownership.
“Through this collaboration with MTI, we are bringing RRUs to the market with the latest features and competitive pricing. This is a game changer that levels the competition in both technical specification and price,” said Mikael Rylander, Mavenir’s SVP and GM, Radio Access Solutions. “The wider ecosystem and open architecture principles not only allow a new alternative for traditional MNO deployments, but create new opportunities for flexible, cutting edge and cost-effective implementations for network densification, introduction of 5G, as well as deployments in enterprise and industry segments.”
Mavenir also announced a new partnership with Turkcell to test and deploy OpenRAN virtual RAN (vRAN) within the Turkcell Group, initially in Turkey. The vRAN solution will be deployed on Turkcell Telco Cloud and will be the first workload that goes live on Turkcell Edge Cloud.
With open interfaces, the solution has the flexibility to support various deployment scenarios – including functional split 2 for enterprises and split 2 & 7 for macro cells. It can also support massive MIMO, edge micro services and network slicing for 5G NR.
“Turkcell has reached more than 60% virtualisation in our mobile core network,” explained Turkcell’s CTO Gediz Sezgin. “We already getting great advantages from what virtualisation has to offer and are looking to extend the benefits of virtualisation coupled with open RAN for the next step in Turkcell’s Radio Access Network evolution”.
The key goals of OpenRAN are to create open interfaces, increase security and deliver greater RAN vendor diversity.
