The FTTH Council Europe has provided an update on fibre deployment trends in Europe. Highlights include:
- 172 million homes now have FTTP (in the form of either FTTH or FTTB) in the EU39 – up from 160 million in 2018
- Iceland has 96.7% coverage of FTTP, Norway 90.2%, Spain 85.6%, France 57.1%, Italy 30.6%, UK 15.1% and Germany 10%. Eastern Europe and Nordic countries have high penetration due to proactive state intervention towards fibre expansion
- alternative ISPs are providing around 56% of the total fibre expansion, with 41% of homes passed by incumbents
- the countries with most homes passed in 2018-19 were France (3.5 million), Italy (1.9 million) and Spain (1.5 million). The UK passed 1.4 million homes during this period
- FTTP take up across the EU39 was 40.9% in September 2019 and 43.3% in the EU28. FTTP subscribers in Europe increased by 15% in the EU39 between September 2018 and September 2019 to 70.4 million in total, with France adding 1.9 million and Spain adding 1.65 million
- Iceland has the highest penetration (FTTH/B subscriptions/households) of FTTP at 65.9%, with Belarus (62.8%) and Sweden (56.8%) coming second and third.
